Our mentoring program takes a unique approach to student-athlete mental health. AFA does not provide clinical mental health services to high school student-athletes. We provide wraparound care by pairing them with a collegiate student-athlete who is Youth Mental Health First Aid Certified (YMHFA).
In this certification, the collegiate athlete will learn the foundation of depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, substance use disorder, and eating disorders. They will learn an action plan called ALGEE, in case there were ever to be a mental health crisis. If a crisis were to ever occur, we can refer the student-athlete to Dr. McDuff where they can get the proper mental health screening.
AFA's Mental Health Committee has also created curriculum for the mentoring program that is focused on mindfulness and emotional intelligence.
